Tipping and service charges on a cruise
How gratuities work at sea, in plain terms.
Crew members on many ships earn part of their income from gratuities. Cruise lines handle this in different ways, so check yours before you sail.
The three common systems
A daily service charge. An amount per person per day is added to your onboard account. It is shared among the crew. On many lines you can ask at guest services to change or remove it, but check the rules of your line first.
Tips included in the fare. Some cruise lines build gratuities into the price. You may still tip for exceptional service if you wish.
Cash tips. A few smaller or traditional ships still expect envelopes at the end of the voyage.
How to prepare
- Read your booking terms for the policy.
- Look at your onboard account during the cruise so the amounts are no surprise.
- If you want to tip extra, follow the ship's guidance on how.
Bars and spa
A service charge is often added automatically to drinks and spa treatments. Check the receipt before you add another tip.
The details change from time to time. Ask your cruise line or travel agent for the current policy.
